What is Domestic Abuse?

How to Leave?

What is Domestic Abuse?

Domestic violence can be broadly defined as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that one partner uses to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner.

Forms of Abuse

There are several forms of abuse, such as physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, economic, spiritual abuse, and stalking.

Leaving

At the time of leaving, it is considered to be the most dangerous period for a victim/survivor of domestic violence. For domestic violence victims or survivors, your safety and health come first. DON'T TELL YOUR ABUSER YOU PLAN TO LEAVE. Important Notice: You do not need documentation to receive emergency housing support through Gracious Hearts. If you are in danger now, call or text 911 immediately.

Your safety plan should reflect your situation and preferences.

For help creating a customized safety plan, contact one of our advocates through our Hotline at +1 888-365-2203 or live chat through our website.

Technology Safety

Modern technology has enhanced abusers' ability to harass and track their victims. Features on electronic devices such as phones, computers, and tablets can reveal your browser and location history, as well as your current location. These devices also store browsing history, usage, and activity. If you select “Escape” to leave the Gracious Hearts website, it will close the website immediately.

Creating a Plan

Safety Planning

Developing a safety plan can help minimize the risk of future harm from an abuser. The following strategies are intended to help you identify protective measures for yourself (and your children) when experiencing any type of abuse and preparing to leave. Remember, you are not alone, the abuse is not your fault, and no one deserves to be in an abusive relationship.
